  • Petra Desert Marathon Run back in time in an Arabian adventure. Start in the ancient city of Petra, pass incredible tombs, mountainside carvings and caves before venturing into the arid, lunar-like landscapes of the Jordanian desert.

  • Australian Outback Marathon Totally stunning. Run on dirt tracks, throw in a couple of sand dunes and include constant views of Uluru or Kata Tjuta. Australia’s red centre is perfect for an adventure marathon.

  • Prudential RideLondon This world-class festival of cycling is a legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games. Riders can participate in the London FreeCycle, or choose a 46-mile or 100-mile return trip to Surrey – all on traffic-free roads.

  • Wellington Marathon It started as a half marathon in 1986 and the full distance has been offered since 2005. This is a great way to run the Wellington waterfront, taking in the capital’s beautiful scenery and best features.

  • Midnight Sun Marathon If you fancy night running, this is your event. The main races start at 8.30pm and 10.30pm – and it will still be light when you finish. Key features are Tromso Bridge and the Arctic Cathedral. Awesome in the golden light.

  • Manitoba Marathon Runners this year finished inside the IGF Stadium – home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Thanks to a new partnership with Blue Bombers, it is the only Canadian Marathon to finish on a Canadian Football League field.

  • Bergen-Voss There’s nothing like a challenging 170km ride from Bergen to Voss to appreciate Norway’s beautiful scenery. You climb 2100m, descend 2050m and discover the difference between both points is only about 50m.

  • Blenheim Palace Triathlon Time is vital in triathlons – and sometimes you need a bit of help to remove your wetsuit before following the swim with a bike and a run. All the action was within the beautiful Blenheim Palace grounds.

  • Glocknerkoenig Become king of the Glockner by riding the Grossglockner High Alpine road from Bruck village square to Fuscher Törl, 2428m above sea level, in Austria. It’s a tough climb but the views are stunning.

  • Great Wall Marathon Time is not important in this marathon but keeping cool is - especially when temperatures hit the mid 30s. The event is tough on a good day and this year the heat made it harder and the finish sweeter.
